After the very recent soul destroying Victorian Bush fires in Australia and the horrible loss of life, it has become extremely clear that the safest way to protect your life is to have a fire proof safe haven or Fire shelter to fall back for you and your family. Research done by CSIRO shows that by 2020 we expect to see a greater number of extreme fire weather days, longer fire seasons and a greater potential for multiple fire events like those seen in the Victorian fires. In south-east Australia, bad fire days are associated with the presence of a ‘blocking’ high pressure system in the Tasman Sea.

This brings hot, dry strong wind from the centre of the continent to the south-east. The high temperatures, some in excess of 45 degrees, and dry air experienced throughout Victoria on Saturday resulted in very low fuel moisture content. Combined with the extended rainfall deficit for much of the state, this resulted in tinder-dry fuel that was very easily ignited and very difficult to extinguish. In addition, to the high pressure system there was an approaching cold front which helped to strengthen winds ahead of the front, as well as causing a wind change after the front passed. Very strong winds resulted in fires that spread very rapidly with the wind and were practically unstoppable until the weather moderated following the cool change.

In this case Victorians should be prepared to protect their lives from bushfires. The best solution of this problem is Fire Shelter. Fire Shelters are designed to be airtight, and therefore only provide a specific limited amount of safe, breathable airtime for occupants once the fire door is closed. The fire door creates an airtight seal when closed and should never be secured when inside unless there is immanent fire danger. Many fire situations can occur where it is not necessary to close the fire door and secure completely, in these situations you can take advantage of monitoring the threat level and closing the door if the threat increases. An important part of every survival plan is to inform friends and relatives that you intend to use your Fire Shelter so people will know where to look for you after a bush fire.

Fire Shelters are designed and engineered to save you and your families life in the event of a bush fire. The reinforced concrete tanks have been developed over the last 22 years and represent the highest of build quality and structural integrity. Fire Shelters are a purpose built Bush Fire bunker that is professionally constructed from ultra high-grade high-density reinforced concrete employing components that are fully fire rated to 3 hours. Our commitment is to giving every country household the opportunity to have a safe haven for the family. Fire Shelters are custom made and all major components are fire rated to Australian standards!

Seven months have passed since Victoria was devastated by the worst bushfires in Australia’s history.  As people begin to come to terms with the scale of the tragedy and start making decisions about their future, it’s clear that the rebuilding process will be a long and challenging process. Seven months on from the bushfires, most families and individuals have settled into temporary accommodation as they start planning for their future. Households are continuing to be supported with material aid and donations, payments through the Appeal Fund, financial and other assistance from the Victorian and Commonwealth Governments, rebuilding advice, personal assistance, case management, advice from their local council and more.

The next fire season is fast approaching. CFA is introducing the 100 days countdown to the fire season to assist every person in every environment to understand how to protect them from bushfire. Especially all Victorians should be prepared well. The State Government has provided details of its plan to establish fire refuges before the next bushfire season. In a submission to the bushfires royal commission, it said its “township protection plans” would involve a pilot program at up to 50 locations, run by the CFA. The Government would promote “neighborhood safer places” as a “last resort” for individual fire plans. The aim would be to identify places of relative safety, for example a house in a street built of brick rather than timber, it said.

The victims of Victorian Black Saturday certainly deserved a better warning system.  Fire Shelter is the answer!
